He is clearly known for his role as Prime Time. Sanders, dressed in a blue sports jacket with red buttons, made it look effortless. He received loud cheers from the crowd at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. He spoke with the passion of a Baptist minister, and he received many “Amens.” He also shed tears. He smiled wide. He even called out for a response towards the end. He shouted, “Do you believe?” to his audience. They shouted back, “We believe.” He was a solid 12 on a scale from 1-10 for enthusiasm. The JSU faithful enjoyed it. He promised much: To bring Jackson State football back into prominence, win the SWAC and recruit power five conference players, to recruit for all other JSU athletic programs, play hard, fast, disciplined football, to look good, win, and win professionally. “I am committed to excellence. Sanders stated that he believes this will be a marriage made in Heaven. The hard part is over: Putting it all together. He will rebuild a proud program that hasn’t had a winning season in three years. The five-season combined record of the three JSU head coaches: 21 wins, 40 losses. Sanders must hire staff. This is something he has never done before. He is required to serve as the team’s CEO, something he has never done at this level. He will have to oversee an offense, defense, and special team, something he has never done before (at least not at the college level). He must recruit, something he has not done before, at least at college level. Sanders has to do all this with very limited resources and facilities. It is worth noting that Sanders was the offensive coordinator for Trinity Christian (near Dallas) in August. Trinity played at Madison Ridgeland Academy in September. Deion Sanders’ four-star recruit, Shedeur Sanders, was the quarterback of Trinity. He has already committed to Florida Atlantic over Alabama State, Florida State and Georgia. MRA, the state’s defending champion in private schools, won the game with a thrilling victory of 27 to 26. It was fascinating to me. Both teams looked well-coached, until a questionable decision was made late in the game. Trinity was leading 26-20 with less than two minutes left. They only had to finish the clock due to a physical offensive line. On second and seven, the visitors took a risky turn and fumbled. MRA recovered and scored the winning score. With Sanders calling the plays, Trinity averaged 46 points per game over the four games. We don’t yet know if Shedeur Sanders will be following his father to JSU. Multiple news reports have revealed that Deion Sanders has been involved in another coaching role at a private Texas high school. Deion Sanders co-founded Prime Prep Academy in 2012, which is a network of charter schools located in north Texas. The end did not go well. The school was shut down in January 2015 after a series of well-publicized issues. Jackson State fans were not affected by the news Monday morning as Deion Sanders joined the long list of Pro Football Hall of Famer associated with JSU. Deion Sanders is now the school of Walter Payton and Jackie Slater. The standings do not include the win at the introductory press conference. It was, however, a promising start for Prime Time.
