Back to the drawing board Leland readies scaled-back bond issue to go on December ballot

Nonprofit Mississippi News LELAND — Leland residents will have a second chance at approving a bond issue to renovate schools by Dec. 10. The $8.75 million bond was rejected by the community on Sept. 10. This result caused disappointment and division between those who voted and those who did not. The proposed bond issue for this time will be for $6.9million. Gary Bailey, an architect working with the district in order to renovate the schools, stated that the board had reduced the scope significantly after hearing from the community. Brandon Taylor, president of the school board, said that the most expensive items were the original designs for the school entranceway and the field house. The field house will not be as big as we expected, but it will still be a brand new house. Taylor stated that although the entry to the high school will be smaller, it will still look great and be safe for students. Bailey stated that the stadium will be reduced by 25 percent, and that renovations to the gym or auditorium have been omitted. The district still faces serious problems, such as lack of heating and cooling. The district’s insurance company declared that the boiler was too dangerous to use. This will mean that the high school will be forced to heat its buildings with portable heaters this winter. Some people believed the September bond issue failed because of misinformation in the days before the election. Taylor stated that the next step is to ensure the public is informed accurately. “Now, we need to ensure that all citizens of Leland are fully informed. Taylor stated that citizens can bring any questions to the town hall session, and will receive honest answers. These are the proposed renovations plans: Edna M.
