Governor approves state takeover of Noxubee County School District

Mississippi News Nonprofit The Noxubee county School district will be removed from local control and placed under the state’s leadership, Gov. Phil Bryant made the announcement Wednesday. The governor made the announcement via his Facebook page. He wrote that he believed it was in the students’ best interests and would help the District to move toward financial and academic health. Last week, the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation as well as the State Board of Education declared an emergency in the district. They asked the governor for permission to declare a state of crisis. A recent investigation audit by the Mississippi Department of Education found that Noxubee was in violation of 81 per cent of the state’s accreditation standards, which all public schools must comply with. Concerns regarding district finances and the ability to pay its employees were cited in the audit. MDE graded Noxubee F for the last two years. Bryant’s declaration of an emergency allows the Department of Education, to grant the district a $2.5million loan to offset financial problems and to place Noxubee in the “District of Transformation”. The local school board will be replaced by the state board of education. The temporary superintendent Roger Liddell will now be replaced by George Gilreath. Rodriguez Broadnax will eventually serve as interim superintendent. This model will see the Noxubee County have an interim superintendent until the district achieves an accountability grade C or higher for five consecutive years. Liddell claimed last week that his county is making progress in education improvement. Noxubee joins the Leflore County School District and Tunica County School District which are both currently under conservatorship.
