‘Hurting her own people’ Espy blasts Hyde-Smith over COVID-19 response

Espy is a Democratic ex-congressionman running against Hyde Smith in the November election. She made comments in March that Hyde Smith said the coronavirus pandemic would “over in two week’s time.” In fact, the first COVID-19 cases in Mississippi were confirmed the same week she made those remarks. Espy stated that Hyde-Smith had “simply not done her part for Mississippi” in a fundraising email. Espy was referring to the senator’s COVID reply on Thursday morning. “This sitting senator is actively hurting herself.” Espy said that Hyde Smith “has simply not done her part to stand up for Mississippi.” Espy sent a fundraising email on Thursday morning in which Espy said that Hyde Smith had “voted to take money from unemployed workers while the unemployment rate doubled” and then said, “Not true.” (Hyde Smith) supported unemployment benefits. “It is Democrats who are blocking this latest relief bill.” “The shameful and increasingly desperate campaign being run Corrupt Mike Espy” Justin Brasell, a Hyde-Smith campaign spokesperson said that there is not one part of the ad that is true. If Mike Espy believed he had a realistic chance of winning this race, he wouldn’t resort to such deplorable tactics and lies. Senator Hyde Smith has fought for billions of dollars in relief funds to help unemployed workers, healthcare providers and small businesses, as we all work together to reopen our economy, fight this pandemic, and make it safe. Hyde-Smith has yet to purchase airtime, which is unusual for an incumbent senator who will be reelected in less than two months. Hyde-Smith has been outraised by Espy in every campaign finance reporting period except one this year. Hyde-Smith raised less money than the 96 U.S. senators. Three of the three women who raised less than Hyde-Smith announced that they are not running for re-election. Brasell told Mississippi Today recently that the Hyde-Smith campaign hadn’t scheduled any events. The Espy campaign is increasing pressure on Hyde Smith to debate this week. Hyde-Smith has yet to accept debate invitations.
