In GOP governor’s race, Waller hits the May campaign trail harder than Foster and Reeves

According to a Mississippi Today analysis, Waller was more traveled than Foster and Reeves during May. These schedules were created using schedules submitted to the campaigns, social media posts, and news articles on election events. Reeves could have stayed closer to home in May because he held more than $6million in campaign cash and ran expensive television ads that were broadcast across the state. In May, the second-term lieutenant governor visited 19 of the state’s 82 counties and made 30 campaign stops. Reeves made more than half his stops in the 12 counties with the highest number of Republican voters in 2016. Waller and Foster were able to hit the road with two distinct campaign strategies, even though they had less money for television advertising. Waller made the most stops of all three Republican candidates. He made at least 54 during May. Waller, the former chief justice of Mississippi Supreme Court, clearly focused his travel strategy in key counties that have the most Republican votes. Seven times he stopped in DeSoto County where he was able to vote for the second-most Republican votes in the state. He stopped in Rankin County four times, which is the state’s most Republican-leaning county. He also stopped in Harrison County four times, where the third largest number of Republican voters lives. 36 of Waller’s May campaign stops were in the top 15 Republican voter-friendly counties. Waller toured 29 of the state’s 82 counties in May, the highest number of Republican gubernatorial candidates. Waller stated, “By meeting people one-on-one or in groups, and participating in debates and forums with them, they deserve to hear directly from those asking for their votes.” Foster, a freshman state representative, made 36 campaign stops in May. He also traveled further than Reeves. Foster concentrated his May travels in the counties with fewer Republican voters, despite making a few stops in heavily populated Republican areas. Foster was the only Republican candidate who visited Carroll County, which is home to 3,800 Republican voter in 2016, Humphreys County and 1,150 Republican voters, Itawamba County and 8,500 Republican voters, and Tunica County which is home to 853 Republican voters. Only 14 of Foster’s 36 stops took place in the top 15 most populous Republican counties. Foster is the only Republican candidate to governor who campaigned in central Mississippi in May. He stopped in Belzoni on May 23rd. Foster stated, “Every area in Mississippi is important to me, even the rural communities.” Foster said that many of these areas have been overlooked by the past leaders of Mississippi. In May, at least one Republican candidate for governor visited each of the state’s 43 counties. Republican candidates did not visit 17 counties with at least 10,000 Republican voters. They declined to visit Hancock County, Lowndes County and Monroe County. Waller was the only Republican candidate who visited ruby red Jones County last month, which is home to 20,000 Republican voter. He stopped by Laurel three times. Foster was the only Republican candidate who visited conservative Pearl River County last month, which is home to 18,000 GOP voter.
