Irb Benjamin pleads guilty in Epps prison bribery case

Benjamin, 69, from Madison was indicted on August 15, 2015, on three federal charges that he conspired in mail fraud and paid kickbacks and bribes to Christopher B. Epps, former chief of corrections, in return for contracts with companies he represented. Indicted in August 2015, Benjamin was accused of paying Epps to Mississippi Correctional Management for contracts to provide drug and alcohol treatment services to state workers in Alcorn and Simpson Counties. For the work, the company received approximately $774,000. Epps was also accused of helping to secure contracts with Alcorn and Chickasaw counties in exchange for consulting services. This was done during the construction and operation of three regional corrections centers. Epps and Cecil McCrory, a Brandon businessman, pleaded guilty in February 2015 to charges related to the bribery scam. However they were not sentenced. Three other defendants have pleaded guilty to similar charges. Benjamin will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate in the early part of 2017. Benjamin could spend up to 10 years prison and pay up to $250,000 fines. Prosecutors want Benjamin to forfeit any money he has earned.
