Jackson elementary school ranked #1 in state

SchoolDigger.com placed Jackson’s Davis Magnet Internationalbaccalaureate Elementary School first among the 403 elementary schools in the state, based on test scores from last year. The U.S. Department of Education has named Davis previously a National Blue Ribbon school and the Mississippi Department of Education consistently gives Davis an A rating. “While Davis Magnet International Board has a top ten ranking, it is difficult to maintain that ranking,” stated Principal Kathleen Grigsby. “All faculty, students, parents, and community members worked together to give their best during the school year and also during the assessments.” Students at Davis receive sign and Spanish instruction, and are part of Accelerated Reader. In order to offer science-based instruction to all grade levels, the school collaborates with the University of Mississippi. SchoolDigger.com reports that Davis is 94% African-American and 35% white. Nearly 65 percent of the students in this district are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. The second-largest district in the state is Jackson Public School District. It is currently rated as a D and has recently been re-accredited to “probation” following an audit by the state education division that found safety issues at the schools.
