Pickings are slim this week

It could have been. You won’t hear such talk this week. Many of our teams take a break this week as college football takes a breather. Ole Miss faces the Wofford Terriers. Southern Miss plays Savannah State Tigers. Georgia plays the Nicholls-State Colonels. LSU faces the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Florida State will play the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. (Charleston Southern suspended half of their team, converting X-rated intoXXXXX. There are some great games, and South Carolina at Mississippi State ranks among them. Let’s have a look at Mississippi State 20 South Carolina 17. These are even-matched teams and it wouldn’t surprise me that the game would go to overtime. State should play with desperation after last week. Defenses will prevail. Ole Miss 52 and Wofford 14 — Talent-wise, the Terriers of Spartanburg (S.C.) are far superior to their counterparts. Southern Miss 59 and Savannah State 7 — Savannah State is a force to be reckoned with. Tennessee State 21, Jackson State 20, — This series has been so long that I’ve made mistakes and picked JSU every time. Alcorn State 24, Alabama State 20, — This was a huge game for Fred McNair’s Braves. They had just led Bethune-Cookman 13-7 last week, when Mother Nature intervened and a long lightning storm ended their game. The match is evenly matched and the home team gets a little bit of an edge. Florida 27, Kentucky 24, — The Gators are the 16-point favorite in The Swamp. It will be closer than that. Tennessee 26, Virginia Tech 24, — Although I think the Vols are overrated, they still manage to win at Bristol. Alabama 31, Western Kentucky 14, — Saban’s assassins were a 28-point favorite. But, I would be shocked if they covered here against a good Western Kentucky sandwiched between Ole Miss and USC.
