Report Jackson charter schools did not meet academic goals

Reimagine Prep is run by Nashville-based RePublic Schools. It had set the goal that all students starting the school year reading below grade level would improve at least 1.5 grades. Only 46 percent of their students achieved this benchmark. Midtown Public Charter School wanted all students to score at the minimum level in math and reading, so that they could show at least 1.5 years growth. Only 20% of their students achieved this goal. Officials claim that because it was only the first year for both schools, it is premature to judge their effectiveness. It will also take longer to improve the performance of low-performing students. Reimagine Prep, Midtown and Midtown both met the financial and organizational goals of the charter authorizer board. The Charter School Authorizer Board produces a report each fall. It includes additional academic data, broken down by gender, ethnicity, and students with and not disabilities. The report also compares the performance of charter school students to Jackson Public Schools students, except for those JPS students who are admitted selectively. Reimagine Prep had a higher percentage (5th graders) who were proficient in English Language Arts and math than those in JPS. Midtown had a lower percentage of proficient math students than JPS but slightly more proficiency in English Language Arts.
