Sierra Club asks Public Service Commission to reject $45 million in upgrades at Coast power plant

Sierra Club requested a public hearing. It will be held at 10 a.m. in Jackson’s Woolfolk State Building. The plant’s operator, Mississippi Power, stated that projects worth $45 million must comply with federal environmental standards. Jeff Shepard, spokesperson for Mississippi Power, stated via email that Plant Daniel “continues to provide tremendous value to our customers.” Sierra Club claims that Plant Daniel is more expensive to run than reliable, clean alternatives. Louie Miller, Sierra Club Mississippi Director, stated in the release, “Nearly five decades ago, the Company dumped million of dollars into it in a last-ditch failed attempt to extend its lifespan.” It’s more uneconomical than ever before, but the company still wants to spend good money on it. It’s time for us to reduce our losses and move on. We ask the Commission to use its authority and investigate whether this is a wise or necessary investment before asking customers for more money. The plant has a capacity of over 1,000 MW when it runs at its maximum. Gulf Power, a Florida utility, owns 50 percent of Plant Daniel and plans to retire the remaining portion. The Environmental Integrity Project’s March report on coal ash pollution revealed that groundwater near Plant Daniel contained five times the safe level of lithium.
