State’s 32-0 Bulldogs play for SEC tourney championship Sunday

They will be playing South Carolina at Bridgestone Arena on Sunday for the Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship. This is South Carolina’s current National Champion. This is the same South Carolina which has won the tournament three consecutive years. This is South Carolina, who defeated Georgia 71-49 Saturday night. Saturday afternoon, State beat Texas A & M with its best shot, and won 70-55. This marks the 29th consecutive win by the Bulldogs in double digits. Texas A & M is the No. 1 team in the country. The winner of 24 games and the 15th team, Texas A & M, won it all. Mississippi State was led by the Aggies nine minutes into this game, thanks to their athleticism and skill. For the whole game, the Aggies outrebounded the Bulldogs by 43 to 32. Chennedy Carter was named the SEC Freshman-of-the Year. She scored 27 points. Anriel Howard, an amazing athlete, scored 17 rebounds. It wasn’t enough. The Bulldogs won the game in the second quarter, as State does so often. They didn’t take off their shoes until they were on the Aggies’ necks. State led by 36 to 28 at intermission and 54 to 40 after three quarters. Vic Schaefer, State coach, said that the team “punched us in our guts and floored” him. “I was really proud” Schaefer stated that he didn’t raise his voice during the quarter-final break, which would have been considered an upset for those who are close to the State program. Schaefer stated, “Sometimes it is better to get out from their way and let the kids figure it out.” “Our seniors know exactly what they are doing. They answered the bell. Schaefer may not have raised his hand, but thousands of State fans in maroon clad screamed. They took over the place and made it feel like “Starkville North,” Schaefer said. Gair Blair, Aggies coach, said that Morgan William was a true winner. Blair nodded his head and continued, “She was very good today.” Blair then shook his head and said, “I asked Morgan prior to the game if they’ll allow me to play at the next level. That’s how humble that child is. They will have her because they know how to make a teamwork. Morgan’s last line was 15 points, two assists, five rebounds, five assists and one steal – that’s an incredible performance for a point guard. However, State can come at you from many directions. Victoria Vivians was the Bulldogs’ leader with 22 points. Vic Schaefer described Victoria as making “big, big shots at big, major moments.” Roshunda John scored 13 points and was a great defender. Teaira McCowan was limited to six points, but she contributed 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. She also altered many shots. Blair stated that McCowan “just intimidates you inside.” McCowan played 39 minutes. So did Blair Schaefer. Vivians played for 35 minutes, Johnson 35, and William 33 minutes. State never had a large enough lead to make Vic Schaefer feel comfortable with his starters being rested for today’s championship match. If you think about it, Vic Schaefer doesn’t. He said, “We are made for this.” “Our children are prepared for this moment. It is not something I worry about. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t go as planned. It’s not going to be like that. “We are made for this moment.”
