My opinion has been that sports journalists, as sportscasters get too caught up in the numbers. It’s easy to get too caught up in the statistics and lose sight of the passion and emotions that make these games special. Sometimes the numbers tell the whole story. For example, Southern Miss wide receiver Allenzae Staplers caught six passes for 292 yard and three touchdowns (75, 81, and 93 yards) on Saturday night in Hattiesburg. Three touchdowns totaling 249 yards or 83 yards per. He averaged almost 50 yards per catch for the night. Southern Miss has been playing football for 104 year. In his fifth game at USM Staggers had the greatest receiving game of all four century. * Nick Mullens, senior quarterback, threw for 592 yards. It could easily have been 600 yards, but Jay Hopson, the Eagles’ coach, pulled the plug after the fourth quarter. Hopson’s decision to kneel several times late in the game instead of running up the score was booed by USM fans. My opinion: This is the right way for every coach to act in similar situations. Civility is a good thing, even in football. * Yes, Chad Kelly was impressive in passing the ball (30-44-1 for 361 yard) during Saturday’s Ole Miss Rebels victory over Memphis. Yes, he has young receivers that look like five-year NFL veterans. The most striking stat about the Rebels’ win? Ole Miss did not have one, but two runners who ran for more than 100 yards against the Tigers. Eugene Brazley ran 124 yards with two touchdowns and 13 carries. Akeem Judd ran 108 yards on 15 totes. The Rebels may win if Ole Miss can run the football effectively, with Kelly’s arm and all the receivers. Hunter Renfroe has hit.387 since being called up to San Diego Padres 10 weeks ago. He has 4 homers and 2 doubles, 13 RBI, and 8 runs. This is 64 home runs and 2 doubles, 13 RBI, 8 runs scored over a 162-game campaign. This does not mean Renfroe, or anyone else, can maintain that pace for a long, long season. This is to suggest that the Padres should have called Renfroe up sooner than they did._x000D
