Trump tweeted, “(Hyde Smith) delivers for Mississippi!” She helped us cut our taxes, secure our border, and defend the Second Amendment. Mike Espy is Cindy’s opponent and a corrupt politician who will raise your taxes and open your borders! Vote for Cindy!” https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1319017749931319297 A Trump campaign visit to Mississippi, considered “safely red” by most politicos for both Trump and Hyde-Smith’s re-election, is unlikely this cycle, with Trump’s campaign focusing on larger swing states. Hyde Smith’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about Trump’s endorsement. However, she tweeted Wednesday, “Thanks for your support @realdonaldtrump!” Hyde Smith has been Trump’s most loyal ally in the Senate. She has supported almost all of his policies and stood by him during impeachment hearings. Hyde-Smith has not done much in person and has not been open to the public for campaigning in Mississippi this year. Her Democratic challenger, former U.S. Rep Mike Espy, has raised millions more in campaign donations than she. The Hyde-Smith campaign relies on proxy support from Trump’s popularity in Mississippi, and an electorate who has voted Republican in all federal elections in the past 30 years. Trump’s endorsement for Hyde-Smith was one of 11 endorsement tweets that he sent on Wednesday afternoon. Other endorsements included those of Republican congressional candidates Michelle Fischbach in Minnesota, Jim Oberweis in Illinois, Eric Esshaki from Michigan, and Jim Marchant, Nevada. Former President Barack Obama also endorsed Hyde Smith’s Democratic challenger Mike Espy. Hyde Smith responded on Twitter to this, saying that voting for Mike Espy was a vote against failed Obama policies. It’s as simple as that.”
