Walmart is spending about $90 million on the new 1-million-square-foot Olive Branch warehouse. Walmart claims the new warehouse will create 250 jobs in DeSoto County. According to Walmart, the new warehouse will store millions of products and ship them directly to customers. “Northwest Mississippi is a great location for businesses with large shipping requirements, such as Walmart,” stated Laura Hipp (Mississippi Development Authority interim director). “The region offers a wealth of transportation options and a dedicated workforce.” Construction is still underway. Walmart has been granted partial exemptions from property taxes by Olive Branch and DeSoto County. DeSoto County states that Walmart has not yet applied to cash in on this incentive. Walmart will likely also receive cash rebates of hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state via the Advantage Jobs Rebate Program in the next ten years. This program allows companies to receive a portion of their investment back in exchange for creating jobs. Walmart committed to creating a minimum number of 202 jobs, with an average annual salary of $39,659, as part of this program. “Hundreds of people from the area joined Walmart to operate this fulfillment center successfully,” stated Ken Adams, mayor of Olive Branch.
