Where do state’s US Senate candidates stand on Brett Kavanaugh confirmation

Friday’s snag in the confirmation process for Kavanaugh was caused by Senator Jeff Flake (a Republican from Arizona) insisting that Senate leaders request the FBI to spend one week investigating allegations of sexual assault against Christine Blasey Ford. On Thursday, Ford testified before Senate Judiciary committee. She claimed that Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted Ford at a party they attended as high school students. On Thursday, Kavanaugh stood before the Senate Judiciary committee after Ford and strongly denied Ford’s allegations. Ford’s accusation will be investigated by the FBI for no more that a week. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether Kavanaugh’s nomination is confirmed or rejected by the Senate. The regular election for the seat currently held in Senate is scheduled for Thursday. Democratic candidate David Baria said: “This Thursday Dr. Blasey Forrester courageously shared her story of sexual assault to the Senate and the entire world. I appreciate the bipartisan call for an FBI full investigation that has been made since then. But, I couldn’t be more disappointed in Mississippi Senators for refusing to join the bipartisan call for an FBI investigation. Our Senators should not hear from credible and courageous witnesses and then immediately dismiss her testimony, without any further investigation. The whole country is watching and waiting to see what happens next. Republican Senator Roger Wicker: Wicker stated that he watched Thursday’s hearing “with an open mind.” We saw Dr. Ford make serious claims, and Judge Kavanaugh strongly denied the charges against him. These and any other allegations are not supported by witnesses or evidence. All of the witnesses Dr. Ford claimed to have seen refuted the allegations. These accusations also contradict the impeccable reputation Judge Kavanaugh enjoys throughout his lifetime among those closest to him. We cannot allow Senate Democrats’ political tactics to delay the process, as they have done since the beginning. It’s time to move forward, and for the Senate vote to vote.” Republican candidate Chris McDaniel said that the vote must be held immediately. Not tomorrow. Not next week. The more this obstructionism drags out, the more the Kavanaughs suffer. Jeff Flake and all other Republicans who call for delaying the vote are helping Democrats to derail this confirmation. Our judicial system is being mocked by the Democrats. The Senate is controlled by the Republicans, but it seems that the Democrats have the upper hand. If Mitch McConnell does not bring this vote to a floor immediately, he will be just as complicit with the Democrats in failing confirm Judge Kavanaugh.” Democratic candidate Mike Espy said: “I listened yesterday to Dr. Ford’s testimony before the U.S. Senate. These serious allegations merit further investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Before Dr. Ford spoke, Senator Cindy Hyde Smith reiterated her support for Judge Kavanaugh. Voting for a lifetime appointment as Supreme Court justice without an investigation is irresponsible, wrong, and not the kind Mississippi needs.” Republican Senator Cindy Hyde Smith: “Let’s get it clear: Opponents to Judge Kavanaugh are engaged to character assassination in order to destroy the reputation a devoted public servant. A loving husband and father,” Hyde Smith tweeted just minutes after Ford was fired. Tobey Bartee: There was no statement. After Thursday’s historic hearing with Christine Blasey Ford, both Mississippi’s U.S. senators affirmed their support for Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. On Thursday, Ford testified before Senate Judiciary committee. She recalled the night 36 years ago when she claimed she was sexually assaulted and abused by the nominee. Kavanaugh later denied the allegations with forceful testimony.
