Melody Cothran asks a customer to tell her if they have ever been sick or if they have been around coronavirus-positive people before she allows them into Terry’s Family Barber in Flowood. After customers have been cleared to enter the shop they are given hand sanitizer. The barbers then disinfect their chairs, change their disposable gloves, and wear masks. Gov. Tate Reeves announced that salons and barbershops can reopen on May 11, but only if safety guidelines are in place. The “Safer-at Home” order is still in effect until May 25, but the governor announced Friday that additional businesses could reopen. Terry’s Family Barber owner Mike Cothran stated that “we are very happy to have been here, and our customers are happy being here.” “We are happy to be open as we can provide for our family and pay our bills,” Mike Cothran, owner of Terry’s Family Barber said. Hand sanitizers should be available at the entrance. Also, chairs must be rearranged so that customers are six feet apart. After each client, the barber or stylist should clean their stations. Valencia White, the owner of Boss Lady’s Luxury Virgin Hair on Ellis Avenue, would usually have multiple customers at different stations within the salon. Although more people can receive services simultaneously, it generates more revenue. However, regulations limit the number of customers that can be served at once. White is thankful her business is now profitable. White stated that her business went from making money every day to making no money at all. “It has been difficult,” she said. “We are grateful that we can reopen, however, it’s kinda slow.” White stated, “It’s hectic trying to curl hair with gloves, or do hair, but we still have the need to do it.” “Even though it’s possible to reopen, we can’t make the same amount of money as when we were full-service, so money is limited.” White is concerned about her slow income and the possibility of pandemics affecting her personal and professional life. White said that they are cautious about the virus as we don’t want it to be passed on to our families.
