State reading initiative to be introduced

The Campaign for Grade Level Reading, University of Mississippi Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction and Senate Education Chairman Gray Tollison will announce the news at 9:30 AM at the State Capitol in Jackson. The third-grade reading gate is governed by the Mississippi Literacy-Based Promotion Act. A student who scores below the lowest achievement level in the 3rd Grade Reading Summative Assessment is required to be kept in the 3rd grade. The law was updated in 2016 to require that students who begin school in 2018 must score at least the highest achievement level to be promoted to the fourth grade. The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a collaboration between schools and communities to increase reading opportunities for students.
