Airport regionalization board clears Legislature

Senator Josh Harkins (R-Flowood) sponsored legislation to replace the five-member Jackson Municipal Airport Authority by a nine-member board whose members are drawn from the greater Jackson region, which includes Rankin and Madison counties. The Senate approved the final bill on April 14. However, it was subject to a motion to reconsider. That motion was filed Wednesday afternoon. The original draft was amended to make it clear that five of nine members must be from Jackson. They will be selected from a mixture of Jackson officials, the governor, and the lieutenant governor. The legislation states that the Legislature must approve any sale of property by the new board. The Jackson Municipal Airport Authority, as well as officials from Jackson, have threatened legal action if the legislation becomes law.
