“Some legislative leaders have changed positions multiple times in the last few days. They are currently considering suspending the rules for changing the flag. This would require a vote of two-thirds. He wrote that this is the number required to override any veto. A vote to alter the rules is not a vote for changing the flag. A veto would not be necessary if they receive those votes. The flag would change and that debate would be over.” Lt. Governor. Delbert Hosemann (the Senate’s presider) is leading the effort to get the two-thirds majority needed to change the flag. Attorney General Lynn Fitch was not present at the meeting with Reeves. Both the Senate and the House lawmakers told Mississippi Today that they were within one to two votes of being able suspend the legislative rules and alter the state flag. Fitch and Mike Chaney, the Insurance Commissioner, were the only two state officials present at the meeting Hosemann and House Speaker Philip Gunn held earlier this week with religious leaders in which the flag was discussed. The influential Mississippi Baptist Convention supported changing the flag after that meeting. Reeves, Secretary of State Michael Watson and Shad White have not yet taken a position regarding whether or not the flag should change. Fitch, Andy Gipson (Agriculture Commissioner), Shad White (Auditor) and Andy Gipson (Agriculture Commissioner) have all supported changing the banner. Chaney and Hosemann have supported the Legislature changing the banner. David McRae, Treasurer, stated that he would support any change made by the Legislature or the people. According to Treasurer David McRae, he supports a change by the Legislature or the people. However, momentum seems to be building in recent weeks from the sports community and other figures to change the controversial flag.
