Bryant declares emergency for storm Gordon

Bryant stated that the declaration was for the three coastal counties of Jackson, Harrison, and Hancock, as well as George and Pearl River, Stone counties, and any other areas where damage to homes or businesses is possible. According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the storm was formed near Florida on Monday morning. It is expected to increase to a Category 1 hurricane by Tuesday night. This could bring 80 mph winds to southern Mississippi and more than 5 inches of rain. Greg Michel, MEMA Executive Director, stated that Gordon will likely cause heavy rainfall in coastal counties. Tidal surges and flooding are also possible. Michel stated that residents in affected counties should be ready for tornadoes and tropical storm force winds. “Isolated tornado threats will not only affect coastal counties, but also South Mississippi.” Many schools have cancelled Tuesday and Wednesday classes; there are also several self-serve locations for sandbags. Keep checking MEMA for any updates.
