HC and me

H.C. Porter is a favorite of mine. Her mixed-media paintings are my favorite (photo, screen printing, and paint). They are bright, bold and tell beautiful stories about Katrina and living blues legends. (Lauchlin Fields was hard at work on the Blues at Home series recording the stories of bluesmen). Personally, I am a huge fan of H.C. Although being an artist can be risky, she has successfully balanced the business and creative sides of her profession. She is a skilled artist in every aspect of the art industry, from her gallery in Vicksburg to the Ridgeland Fine Art Festival at Renaissance this weekend. For Conversations, my Mississippi Public Broadcasting program, Conversations, I interviewed her today. We spoke about her mom’s influence on her decision to be an artist (I had the pleasure of meeting her mom several years ago and loved her), her college years, and how she returned to Mississippi. We also discussed her Katrina work, which was the moment I was first exposed to her talent. In FOUR MOUNTHS, she produced 81 pieces! H.C. is a storyteller. H.C. sees the stories that are needed and tells them in a unique way. It was a pleasure to spend time with her and I look forward to the next episode. I will post the link as soon as it is available.
