On Thursday, the campaigns filed their final major financial reports ahead of the Nov.3 general election. As of Oct. 14, Espy had raised almost $9.3 million for the race, thanks to a national flood of cash donated by Democratic congressional candidates. Hyde-Smith had raised just over $3 million. Espy reported that she had nearly $3.7 million in cash available for the crucial final stretch. Hyde-Smith said he had $777,000 cash in his hand. Espy used his cash advantage to flood the airwaves and establish a large field operation. Hyde-Smith did comparatively less campaigning and advertising than Espy. National political forecasters still consider Mississippi “safely Republican.” However, Espy’s campaign has been given some national attention as a possible Democratic upset in the battle for the Senate.
