Mississippi Stories Dr Jeannine Herron

This episode of Mississippi Stories features Marshall Ramsey, Mississippi Today Editor at Large, and Jeannine Herron (neuropsychologist, reading expert, and widow of Civil Rights photographer Matt Herron). The Mississippi Museum of Art and Barksdale Reading Institute have teamed up to provide Jackson’s pre-schoolers with a new way to read and write this semester. This is thanks to the acquisition of civil rights photos by MMA. MMA recently acquired 80 vintage photos of the Civil Rights Movement by Matt Herron, a renowned photographer. These photographs were mostly taken in Mississippi in 1963-65. In 2020, he died leaving behind a legacy of historical photos. The acquisition will make MMA the only museum in the country with the largest collection of vintage Herron photos. Jeannine Herron (Dr. Jeannine Herron’s wife) is the link to Barksdale Institute. She is a neuropsychologist and came to Jackson in 1963 to honour Medgar Evers’ death by walking down Lynch Street with hundreds of other grieving citizens. In Mississippi, she also established the first Head Start program. Ramsey and Herron discuss Ramsey’s photographs, Mississippi, the importance and learning to read, Jackson, and Ramsey’s time there.
