State approves JPS plan for improvement, warns Hazlehurst

The Mississippi State Board of Education approved Wednesday the corrective action plan (CAP) for the district. This was the first document the district had to submit since being placed on probationary status. The CAP includes specific timelines and actions that address the issues identified in a August 2017 investigation by the Mississippi Department of Education. Last month, the board delayed approval of CAP because the Department of Education said that the plan was too broad and not sufficiently specific. The Natchez-Adams School district’s CAP was also approved by the board on Wednesday. However, the board rejected the plan submitted to it by Hazlehurst School district. Paula Vanderford, MDE Chief Accountability Officer, told the board that Hazlehurst submitted its original CAP following a deadline. She then submitted a revised plan which also needed work. Vanderford stated that the district has undergone at least three revisions and they are still in need of more work. Vanderford did not recommend that the board approve the submitted plans. The district, like JPS and Natchez-Adams is currently on probation. However, the board could choose to remove Hazlehurst from accreditation. “This is far beyond the timeline and when you consider that JPS has produced an acceptable correctional action plan that is more than 400 pages long, it’s hard to understand why we aren’t in a position to receive this from the district that should have been acceptable at this stage,” stated State Superintendent Carey Wright.
