Rick Wilson, co-founder of Lincoln Project and a veteran Republican strategist and field director for President George H.W., said “We’re going there”. Bush’s 1988 campaign. “We’re going (to help) Espy… It’s right to do. Mike Espy wins “I don’t wish to be embarrassed by an insane” demo. The Lincoln Project is known for its brutal ads, which often question the character or morals of Republican candidates. Wilson stated that the political committee will run ads in Mississippi similar to those it ran in Alaska in support of Al Gross, a Democratic Senate candidate. The Lincoln Project purchased an Alaska ad in support of challengers to GOP candidate Dan Sullivan with a $482,000 purchase. This was part of a $4million campaign. Wilson announced the news this week on The Daily Beast’s podcast “The New Abnormal”. He was speaking with Stuart Stevens (a Mississippi native and long-time Republican campaign strategist and best-selling author). In an interview with Mississippi Today, Stevens, a consultant for The Lincoln Project, stated that he personally donated to the Espy campaign. He also said that “I believe he can win” even though Mississippi is a red state that has voted Republican in federal elections since decades. Stevens claimed that Hyde-Smith was a Trump sycophant, “accidental candidate” and that he believes Mississippi would see an extremely high African American voter turnout to Espy and “an erosion in Trump votes,” especially among women. Stevens stated, “Yes, Espy can win. And I think last night [with the presidential debate] all Senate Republican candidates took a hit.” “… It is hard to understand how anyone, including a woman, could support Trump, whose defense of not raping a journalist stated that she wasn’t his type. Stevens was referring specifically to columnist E. Jean Carroll’s claims that Trump raped her during the mid-1990s and Trump’s denial. Stevens stated that he believes there are many Republicans who find Trump irresponsible. “Trump is the ultimate wealthy Yankee that we were warned about — how he treats women and thinks money can purchase anything, and how he makes fun at Southern accents…. I have always considered Mississippi a place where people care more about values, role models, and values,” Stevens stated. Does anyone think Cindy Hyde Smith can become one? … She’s a sort of an accidental senator and I don’t think nine of 10 Mississippi voters would pick her out from a line…. Who would you prefer to have in the office a Fortune 500 company trying convince them to move to Mississippi? Mike Espy or Cindy Hyde Smith?”
