Trump to stump for Sen Hyde-Smith in historically deep red Mississippi

On Friday, September 14, the president will host a rally in support of U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde Smith at the Mississippi Coliseum, Jackson. This is where Trump held his August 2016 campaign rally. This is the first time that Trump has endorsed a senatorial candidate from a safe Republican state in this election cycle. In August, Trump used Twitter to endorse Hyde Smith, who was appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant was appointed temporarily to fill the vacant seat left by Republican U.S. Senator Thad Cochran’s retirement this spring. In an officially nonpartisan November special elections, Hyde-Smith will be facing three challengers. They are Chris McDaniel (Republican state senator from Ellisville), former Democratic U.S. Rep and Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy, and Gautier Democrat Tobey bartee. Trump’s visit comes on the heels of a controversy at his White House. A New York Times op ed by an anonymous senior Administration official stated that Trump “continues in a manner which is detrimental to the Health of Our Republic.” His opponents are fellow Republican state senator Chris McDaniel of Ellisville, former Democratic U.S. Rep and Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy, and Gautier Democrat Tobey Bartee. Hyde Smith’s campaign released a brief statement about Trump, saying that Cindy Hyde Smith has supported him 100% since she took office. Geoff Pender, writing in the Clarion Ledger reported Friday morning that the event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Coliseum. Trump made his most recent visit to Mississippi in December 2017. He was invited by Bryant for the bicentennial celebrations and ribbon cutting of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Bryant posted a statement on his Facebook page, “I’m so grateful President Trump is coming back to Mississippi to support the U.S. Cindy Hyde Smith, Senator. Cindy Hyde Smith, Senator. McDaniel narrowly lost the Republican primary to Thad Cochran in 2014. He routinely reminds voters Hyde-Smith was a Democrat in her three terms as the state Senate. Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story, as well as several others on our website, incorrectly identified Tobey Bartee (U.S. Senate candidate) in the Gautier title. According to his campaign website he was most recently an Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Every story where Bartee’s identity is incorrectly identified has been corrected. We are sorry for the mistakes.
