Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann is likely to refer Thursday’s resolution to the Rules Committee, chaired by Senator President Pro Tem Dean Kirby (R-Pearl). Kirby stated that he doesn’t believe the Legislature should alter the flag by itself. Kirby stated that he would support a referendum of the people, similar to 2001’s vote by 64 percent of Mississippi voters to keep the flag. Kirby stated, “Put it up on the ballot and allow the people to make this decision.” “I believe that’s where most Republicans will be on this — at the least, that’s what they tell ….. (The 2001 referendum was probably the largest vote in Rankin County for presidential, statewide and other issues.) Sen. Chris McDaniel of Ellisville said he supports the old flag but would be open to a discussion if the issue was put on the ballot via a citizen-sponsored initiative rather than through the Legislature. Senator Scott DeLano (R-Biloxi) said that he is not yet certain about changing the flag. DeLano stated, “I would have to see what’s proposed, brought forward, and how it’s brought forward.” “I’m concerned that the Legislature does not give it proper due diligence or debate. It deserves the right attention. Sen. Walter Michel (Ridgeland), was the only Republican legislator to publicly support the flag replacement. Michel stated that he voted to change the flag in 2001 and would vote again if it was up for a referendum or before the Senate. Michel stated that he is not afraid to vote for it to be changed as a senator. Michel stated, “I’m for it being changed.” The question of which flag to replace the current one has been a thorn in the sidelines. A bipartisan group of House Members supports the Stennis Flag. “I support any viable alternative to this flag,” stated Sen. David Blount (D-Jackson), one of the cosponsors for the Senate suspension resolution filed Thursday. Simmons echoed similar sentiments.
