Four Mississippi legislative races headed for runoff after special elections

Tuesday’s nonpartisan special elections were: House District 37. Lynn Wright, former Lowndes County Schools Superintendent, and David Chism, business owner, appeared to be heading to a runoff in a three-person race for Rep. Gary Chism (cousin to David Chism), to replace longtime Rep. Gary Chism. This district covers parts of Clay, Lowndes, and Oktibbeha Counties. House District 66 Jackson City Councilman De’Keither A. Stamps, and Robert C. “Bob” Lee Jr. seem to be heading to a runoff. They were among six candidates to succeed Rep. Jarvis Dortch (D-Raymond), who resigned to take up the position of director of American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi. This district is located in Hinds County. Senate District 15 Businessman Bart Williams, and Joyce Meek Yates, educator, appear to be headed for a runoff. The two men led polling in a race for long-time senator Gary Jackson (R-French Camp), who resigned in June due to health reasons. This district covers parts of Choctaw and Oktibbeha counties as well as Webster. After leading in a field of nine candidates on Tuesday night, Senator District 39 Attorney Jason Barrett appeared poised for a runoff with bank chairman Bill Sones. The race to replace long-time senator Sally Doty (R-Brookhaven), who resigned in July to accept a position as director of the state Public Utilities Staff. This district encompasses parts of Copiah and Lawrence counties, Lincoln, and Walthall.
