Interactive How many students and teachers have tested positive for COVID-19 in your county

Mississippi Department of Health recently released data that shows nearly 900 Mississippi students, teachers, and other employees of K-12 schools were positive for coronavirus. The department now provides information about infections in schools for the first time. Each week, every K-12 school in Mississippi (public and private) must report information on outbreaks and cases among students and staff. While most public schools have or plan to open in this month, some schools opened classes as early as July while others won’t resume until after Labor Day. According to the Mississippi Department of Education data, 465,913 students were enrolled in public schools in the 2019-2020 school years. The MSDH data are broken down by county and not by school district. This information was provided by the state to 720 schools across 74 counties. The highest student infected per capita (number of cases per 10,000) is found in Tunica County at 13.8, closely followed by Alcorn at 12.9. At 7.6, Coahoma County has the highest teacher and school staff infective rate, followed by Alcorn at 12.9. A map showing the total infection rates for each county can be accessed here. Combining all Coronavirus-related Coronavirus cases (both students and staff), Tunica and Alcorn counties had again the highest per capita infection rates at 17.7 and 15.9. These numbers were published on Aug. 25, and the Mississippi Department of Health stated that they would be updated weekly. You can find information about a particular county here.
