Ole Miss pianist ‘honored’ to share internationally acclaimed talents with Mississippi, aid local artists

His most recent album, “Citizen”, was released last month. He also performed a series of 10 sold-out concerts at London’s Royal Opera House. Younger Mississippi talents, such as Cecil Price Walden, composer, and Brooke P. Alexander are also benefiting from Levingston’s international success. Alexander created the cover art of “Citizen”. Levingston stated in a university news article that Alexander said, “It’s such a privilege…to represent the university, my home state abroad, and to bring attention the incredible artists Mississippi has produced in past years, as well as the brilliant artist for the future like Price Walden, Brooke Alexander, and Marie Hull.” Levingston was born in Greenville and is a well-known figure in contemporary music. He has given world premieres at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, as well as other international venues. The New York Times referred to him as one of the “most adventurous musicians of today” and The New Yorker called him “a force of new music.” Gov. Phil Bryant said that Bruce Levingston was “our greatest living ambassador for Mississippi’s arts and culture, and that he is doing so by supporting and highlighting important Mississippi artists. Phil Bryant released a statement. In 2017, Levingston was among seven musicians inducted into Mississippi’s Musician Hall of Fame. The organization inducts Mississippians each year into the Hall of Fame. They are musicians who have made significant contributions to the state’s musical heritage and had a profound influence on the world music industry. The Oxford community is grateful to Levingston for sharing his talents with them, while also shining a positive light upon the state.
