Holly Springs, Mississippi native Elise Jordan, a political analyst at MSNBC and NBC News and a TIME contributing journalist, will give the opening keynote address of “People, Politics and the Press 2020”. Mississippi Today, in partnership with the Mississippi Museum of Art and the state Humanities Council, will host the summit on Saturday, January 11. “People, Politics and the Press” is one of Mississippi Today’s most recognizable events. It is an integral part of the way the newsroom lives its mission of civic engagement and public dialogue. Mary Margaret White, executive director of Mississippi Today, said that this event provides a great opportunity for readers to meet journalists from Mississippi Today and other countries and ask questions about issues and process. Curtis Wilkie is the chair of the Journalism Department at the University of Mississippi. Ryan L. Nave is the Mississippi Today editor in chief. Katrice Hardy is the USA Today regional editor. Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. and cartoonists Marshall Ramsey, Scott Stantis are also featured speakers. A number of reporters with Mississippi roots will also be featured, including Ko Bragg, editor of “Frontline”, Jerry Mitchell, Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting, and Mississippi Today reporters Anna Wolfe and Adam Ganucheau as well as Larrison Campbell, Aallyah Wright, and Larrison Campbell. The topics include journalism’s role in democracy, investigative stories, and storytelling about resilience in Mississippi and the South. The topic of political reporters will be how they pursue stories in today’s political climate.
