Poulter brings swashbuckling style to Sanderson Farms event

Poulter will play in the Sanderson Farms Championship at Country Club of Jackson next week, following a painful foot injury. This is good news for Mississippi golf fans. Poulter was among several commitments made Wednesday by Mississippi’s lone PGA Tour event, alongside 2006 U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilve, and David Duval (the former No. Poulter is the No. 1 golfer worldwide. Poulter helped Europe win four Ryder Cups. His overall record (12-3-1 and 4-0-1 in singles matches), is one of the most impressive in Ryder Cup history. It seems like he made a crucial putt every time. Poulter’s swashbuckling style has also been an emotional catalyst for Europeans. His most memorable Ryder Cup moment was at Medinah in 2012. He birdied five of the final holes to help Rory McIlroy win an important four-ball match against Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner. He stood on the first hole at Medinah’s famed Medinah, encouraging the cheering crowd to cheer as he drove off the ball from the first fairway. He seemed to be saying, “Bring it on!” He hit it down the middle, and won. Poulter was vice-captain of the Europeans at the Hazeltine Ryder Cup. This cup was won by the Americans. Clutch putting could have been a better option for the Europeans. The Sanderson Farms Championship field has become perhaps the most impressive in its 49-year history. The 132-player field now includes past champions Scott Stallings (2012), Will MacKenzie (2008), along with major champions Angel Cabrera and Retief Goosen, Lucas Glover and David Toms. Next Wednesday’s Pro-Am will take place, followed by the 72-hole tournament on Thursday and Sunday.
