School districts hailed for expanding AP

The Mississippi Department of Education has announced that the three districts were included on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll. This honor roll was created by the non-profit College Board. Carey Wright, the state superintendent of education, said that “the leaders and teachers in DeSoto and Booneville school districts should be commended for expanding student accessibility to AP courses.” “AP classes expose students college-level material, and help them understand the expectations of college success,” Carey Wright, state superintendent of education said. To be on the Honor Roll, districts must increase participation in AP courses as well as increase or maintain AP exam scores of 3+. Mississippi is not the top state for AP participation but it is making progress. From 2014-2015 to 2015-2016, the number of students taking AP tests increased by 23.1 per cent. Mississippi students took 12,455 of the AP exams in the last school year. About 11 percent more students scored a 3 or better than before, to 3,707. The College Board was founded in 1900 and is a non-profit organization. It connects students with college success and opportunities through programs and services that support college readiness and success.
