Small town, big bust Auditor announces Mississippi embezzlement arrest

Shad White, the State Auditor, announced Tuesday that Rawle, 49 years old, was arrested by agents on Monday at the Coast. Rawle is accused in stealing almost $290,000. White stated that the loss of these amounts would have a profound impact on a city with $33 million in budget. “Mr. White stated that Rawle had stolen a lot from Columbus’ taxpayers. “… It’s time for the prosecutors to send Rawle to prison and get their money back.” White stated that Rawle was currently being held at the Lowndes County Jail Tuesday morning while he awaited his initial court appearance. Rawle could face up to 20 years imprisonment and $25,000 in fines, if convicted. White issued Rawle a repayment demand of almost $355,000 that includes interest and costs. White and Columbus Mayor Robert Smith Sr. said Tuesday that Wanda Holley (a certified public accountant who was performing a routine city audit) discovered the issue. She notified city officials, who in turn contacted White’s office. White stated that his office is not allowed to audit Mississippi cities. He relies on the tips of whistleblowers and private audit firms. He said suspected fraud can be reported to his office by “clicking the red button” at www.osa.ms.gov or via telephone during business hours at 1-(800)-321-1275.
